Social Media

A course to guide young people towards a better understanding and correct use of social networks, not only for personal purposes, but also to develop specific and relevant professional skills.

The social network management project was launched in 2018 with the aim of helping children at the João Paulo II Educational Centre understand and use social media as a tool of communication seriously and professionally, without exposing them to potentially dangerous situations.

The training was carried out in partnership with Share Social Media thanks to João Marcelo and Luan, who were able to engage the students by teaching them the potential dangers of the internet and, at the same time, illustrating how social media can become a source of income if used cleverly.

The course allowed the kids to get to know and use the different social media, their features and functions. In particular, the students learnt how to take good pictures and to combine them with a content as to make them meaningful.

The two teachers and the students created a sort of “agency” inside the Centre and divided it into areas; every student was responsible for one area and task: content production, monitoring, graphics, institutional relations, etc. In this way, the students understood the processes behind a professional use of social media and began to be responsible for managing the Centre’s social media (Instagram, Facebook, Youtube and Twitter).

In 2019, after completing the training course, students continued managing the social media of the Educational Centre, under the supervision of the computer science professor. Currently the group consists of 18 student who are in charge of the materials they are provided with by the Institution (cameras, smartphones, motion cameras), as well as of all institutional communication through social media; they also deals with recording the events that take place at the Centre, both during the week and at the weekends, such as the Esportivo do Subúrbio Festival.
