Epiphany Day

Reviving traditions and popular culture, which have particularly strong roots in the Recôncavo Baiano, the João Paulo II Educational Center has been leaving an indelible mark for years by organizing the famous Folia de Reis. Folia de Reis is a celebration that honors values such as generosity and gratitude, and it is open to the entire community that helps keep this tradition alive.

The long rehearsals for the songs and choreography of Folia de Reis prove invaluable when their full charm shines during the colorful parades held annually in Pelourinho, the historic center and cultural heart of the city of Salvador, and through the community alleys, filling the streets with joy as clowns, revelers, flag bearers, angels, Magi, percussionists, and a crowd that appreciates and follows them.

Originating in Portugal, this tradition represents the procession of the Magi in search of the Baby Jesus, accompanied by songs and the emblematic Bandeira do Divino (Flag of the Divine).

The first edition of Folia de Reis took place in 2001, and since then, it has involved around 250 children and adolescents, who parade not only through the historic streets of Pelourinho but also through local communities, bringing joy and enchantment to all who witness it.

It’s an emotional moment when the community comes together to celebrate the beauty of this important event.

“Do not let yourselves be carried away by life, but take it into your own hands and decide to make it a true and personal masterpiece!”.

Pope John Paul II to the Youth, 1985.
